The Adams County Historical Society is home to an
interesting collection of material related to the American Civil War and the
Battle of Gettysburg.
The Society's Library contains the following:
- A collection of books covering various Civil War
topics
- 18 volumes of civilian accounts of the Battle of
Gettysburg and the aftermath
- The Official Records of the Rebellion
- Damage Claim files (microfilm)
- Newspapers (hardcopy, microfilm, and electronic
access)
- Subject files on people, places, and organizations
- Family files
- Confederate dead burials recorded by Dr. John W.C.
O'Neal
- Map Collection
The Society's photograph collection has over 3,000
images related to the Battle of Gettysburg. This collection includes an exclusive portion of William H.
Tipton's work. The Society holds
three of Tipton's sample books containing over 1,000 images. The collection also includes the John
S. Rice Collection, chairman of the 1938 reunion, his collection contains
hundreds of photographs taken at the 75th anniversary of the Battle
of Gettysburg. The Society's
collection mainly consists of individual soldiers from Adams County, Gettysburg
Battlefield monuments, farmsteads, images of the town, and post-war reunions.
The Society's museum includes a gallery dedicated to the
history of Adams County in the Civil War.
A few highlights of this gallery are:- The bullet damaged headboard from the bed of Harvey D.
Sweeney, now the Farnsworth House restaurant
- A silver tea service set which belonged to Dr. Charles
Philip Krauth, a Seminary professor, recovered after being seized by
Confederate soldiers
- A modified Sharps rifle made for the Berdan
Sharpshooters
- Several officers swords
- A railroad tie and a piece of the rail from the
electric railway that once traversed the Gettysburg Battlefield
- Early souvenirs once available for purchase in the
gift shops of Gettysburg
- A musket that once belonged to John Burns, "the
civilian hero of Gettysburg"
