Free Virtual Program: Eisenhower and the Civil War

Thursday, May 26, 2022
7:00 pm8:30 pm

From his first visit in May, 1915 to his retirement years in the 1960s, Dwight David Eisenhower had a lifelong fascination with the Battle of Gettysburg and the American Civil War. Eisenhower’s interest in Civil War history shaped his private and public life, ultimately leading him to purchase a farm in Gettysburg—the only home he and his wife Mamie Eisenhower would ever own.

This program will cover Eisenhower’s thoughts on Civil War leaders, his time on the Gettysburg battlefield, his role in commemorating the history of Gettysburg, and Civil War connections in the Eisenhower home, itself.

Our speaker is Daniel Vermilya, a park ranger at the Eisenhower National Historic Site in Gettysburg, PA. He has previously worked at Antietam National Battlefield, Monocacy National Battlefield, and Gettysburg National Military Park.
