Following the disastrous defeat of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia at Gettysburg, General Robert E. Lee ordered his men to withdraw across the South Mountain Range into the Cumberland Valley and southward to the safety of Virginia. However, disengaging his forces and protecting his rear guard would be no simple task. Join historian Timothy H. Smith as he discusses the first few critical days of the Southern retreat from Gettysburg.
