Join us for a special program with Barcelona-based Holocaust research and film subject Dory Sontheimer for a discussion of her book, The Seven Boxes. Raised as a Catholic in Franco's Spain, Sontheimer discovered, as an adult, seven boxes containing the hidden past of her family's Jewish heritage and her parent's escape from the Nazi regime. The discovery sparked research to uncover her family's truth and reconnect family scattered around the globe. This resulted in her book and the subsequent film of the same name. Following her presentation at ACHS, Sontheimer will travel to D.C. to donate the contents of her family's boxes to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in a special ceremony.

Film Description: One day, Dory Sontheimer, a Barcelona native with German roots, discovers the terrifying past of her Jewish family, buried in the attic of her room. She finds a detailed account of the suffering her parents went through to escape the Nazi regime, all hidden away for decades in seven boxes. Accompanied by historians, writers, and journalists, she embarks on a journey from Catalonia to the United States, passing through Germany, the Czech Republic, Argentina, and many other places to meet her unknown relatives and restore her history.

This program will feature a preview screening and conversation. Tickets are free for ACHS members and $10/general admission.
