Saturday, February 3, 2024
11:00 am12:00 pm

The American Civil War transformed the daily lives of every citizen of our country in both the North and South, but for Black Americans these changes were especially profound. Located along the border of Maryland and Pennsylvania, Adams Countians witnessed the effect of slavery on the region and the turmoil caused by slave catchers and the Fugitive Slave Act. During the four years of war, the area was transformed by the constant threat of invasion. Join historian Timothy H. Smith, as he discusses the Black community in Gettysburg prior to 1860 and tells some of the lesser known stories of the people who lived here.
